Many visitors travelling from the eastern states take the Great Ocean Road and access Victor Harbor by crossing the mighty Murray River at Wellington.

It has been a favourite holiday destination for travellers and families since the late 1800s and maintains a sense of rustic charm. The beautiful Mediterranean climate lends itself to pleasant experiences all year round.

The clydesdale horses are expected to start operating on the new causeway from Boxing Day 2021.

The town itself is nestled in Encounter Bay, with a coastline featuring the dramatic rock outcrop of The Bluff and, of course, the very popular Granite Island.

On Granite Island you simply have to try the world’s only daily Horse Drawn Tram service, which has been in operation since 1886.

The $43 million project boosting tourism for Victor Harbor, providing access to Granite Island Nature Reserve

Victor Harbor’s new causeway has been officially opened to the public as the original structure alongside it is set for demolition in February 2022 after standing for over 150 years.

Victor Harbor Mayor Moira Jenkins said the new causeway also included the longest piece of Aboriginal artwork in the state.

The ends of the old causeway will be kept as viewing platforms, so people will be able to walk onto the old historic causeway and actually look at the difference between that and the new causeway, and it will be safe for people standing there.

Wildlife & Encounter Bay

Wildlife encounters are also on the cards with Victor Harbor offering some of the best spots for close up, land-based whale watching. There are many easy access vantage points including boat tours to enjoy. There’s also plenty of opportunities to have a traditional holiday experience. Relax and play golf, lawn bowls, croquet, tennis or volleyball, there are a multitude of things to do when you holiday in Victor Harbor.

As if those weren’t reason enough, the proximity to Kangaroo Island, to the River Port of Goolwa and to the Southern Wine Region makes this a choice location to base a holiday for other great South Australian experiences.

Victor Harbor offers the perfect backdrop for events, with a full calendar of free community events, sporting events both large and small, markets, workshops, festivals, live performances and arts!
