The Barristers Block label was created in 2004 by Jan Siemelink-Allen with the opening of the Cellar Door in 2008. Located at 141 Onkaparinga Valley Road, Woodside in picturesque surroundings, it strives to maintain the highest standards of excellence.

Ensuring the best fruit of the regions allows a particular varietal. As well as sourcing quality fruit from regions, the family farm in the Wrattonbully region has a 25-acre vineyard, growing Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. There is a 20-acre vineyard at Woodside in the Adelaide Hills (behind the Cellar Door).

Barristers Block Family – the Allens

As they were growing up, Jan Siemelink-Allen was often seen by her two sons to be riding on a tractor or tending to animals on their farm. The recessions of the 1980s and 1990s had a damaging effect on the family and one of the outcomes of this was Jan’s divorce. Originally from the Adelaide Hills, the now single mother returned with her two sons James and Lachlan Allen.

Jan moved into wine sales for a top company and invested in a joint venture. Unfortunately, this turned out badly and a lengthy, costly and stressful court case ensued. Fortunately, Jan’s determination and resolve was worthwhile and she ended up winning the case.

Jan’s mother passed away in 2006 and she turned her attentions to the Shiraz and Cabernet vines that had been planted at Wrattonbully. Risking everything, Jan bought the property at Woodside in order to create family orientated winery experience. Jan had to juggle the Wrattonbully vineyard and the Woodside Cellar Door, regularly making the eight-hour round trip.

The genesis of Barristers Block? A true ‘colourful’ Australian story, grounded in the harsh realities of farming during the nineties and the six-year legal battle to save our vineyard. Thus, we affectionately named our winery Barristers Block. We’re certainly not lawyers.

Barristers Block Story: Tongue in cheek? Perhaps a little…

Turnaround Success Story

Unfortunately, Barristers Block suffered a complete loss of their Adelaide Hills wine grapes in December 2019 after they were destroyed in the Cudlee Creek bushfire. Jan’s two sons would now have a great opportunity to help and support their mother! Luckily James Allen is a chartered accountant and partner at Bentleys SA – a handy resource for any business facing a crisis.

Lachlan Allen came to provide operational support. Having grown up on a farm, his involvement in agriculture, farming enterprise, livestock and vineyards proved invaluable. This also meant the family was well-positioned to tackle the tough conditions brought on by the pandemic and coronavirus restrictions. Lachlan was elected to the Wine Grape Council of SA in October 2021.

It took a long time for the area to be safe after the fires and for people to regain confidence about returning to the region. We had zero production off those crops for vintage this year, but the impacts from COVID-19 have definitely come in waves. We are constantly pivoting the business at a rate of knots to stay afloat and it has been difficult, but we want this over as much as anyone else does.

Jan, James & Lachlan

Jan, James, Lachlan – the Allen family – are clearly hard working and not afraid to be ‘hands-on’. The family is actively involved in all aspects of the business and you’ll often see them around the cellar door.

The family’s passion is poured into every bottle with the Wrattonbully vineyard producing award-winning Shiraz and Cabernet varieties, and the cool-climate Adelaide Hills vineyard being perfect for Tempranillo, Sauvignon Blanc, Fiano, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Having survived multiple traumatic experiences and difficult hurdles, the family remains resilient and hopeful for the future.

The best way to support Barristers Block and the fire-affected regions is to buy our wine, visit the regions and support South Australia.
