These are the questions John Purl asked himself several years ago and it was the lack of answers that motivated him to engage his own coach. However, the coaching experience was not what he thought it would be. That is, he did not feel like it was customised and personalised for himself, his objectives and his needs.

This provided for a lightbulb moment where John knew he needed to establish a coaching business that was high touch, personalised and where the key was holding clients accountable to ensure goals were achieved. But, what had started as his journey transformed into his own mission and ‘John Purl Coaching’ was started.

John Purl’s Background

John Purl was born in England in 1981, an only child to two hard-working parents. John was an active, energetic child and always on the run. In fact, at the age of three John was diagnosed with Hyperactivity (ADHD). John says this explains his hunger and drive to grow, learn and succeed in all that he does. At the age of five, John moved to Adelaide, South Australia.

At school, John admits he was a nightmare. Whilst John was a high achiever in his early years, he says that he never actually applied himself. John admits to being more interested in being the class clown and involving himself in his sports. In fact, John was actually asked to leave school on several occasions because he was ‘wasting time’!

John also confesses that his way of eating as a teenager was terrible – “fast food and microwave meals”. John ate whatever he wanted which, in turn, made him ill with IBS, colds, chest infections and severe acne. John spent between the ages of 12 and 20 on various antibiotics, destroying his gut health nearly to the point of no return. John says that although he always remained active and maintained his gym training, he continued to eat poorly.

Realisation

John Purl had been working in the financial advice industry for an Adelaide based firm since 2004, but over time he had a realisation that his personal values were not aligned with how big business conducted itself. John worked for a US Investment Bank and Big Four Australian Banks, helping a wide range clients and high net worth individuals and families. In 2010, determined to feel better and operate at a higher level, John Purl began researching and experimenting with various nutritional hacks, eating styles, supplementation, training styles and alternative therapies.

John’s desire to have genuine relationships with clients and his own passion to find balance with his health, fitness, wealth, nutrition and family was to change the course of his career and, indeed, his lifestyle completely.

Fast forward several years – Accounting Diploma, Commerce Degree at Uni, first wealth advisory role in 2004 in Adelaide, moved to Melbourne (Australia) for three years before returning to work for large corporate/investment banks in Adelaide.

This was an opportunity many in my field of wealth advisory were envious of, however, for me, I felt like it was not the right fit. I felt as if it did not align with who I really was and what my values were. So, in 2014 and two weeks before my wedding……I quit!

Change of Direction

Discovering a clear correlation between health and wellbeing with the quality of life and career success, John took proactive steps to change. In 2014, John Purl created his wealth advisory business and named it ‘Affinitas Capital’ because ‘Affinitas’ is Latin for ‘relationship’. The firm was to cater for busy professionals and business owners. John says that one of his core objectives was to develop genuine relationships with clients and to ensure they are put into the best financial position. John describes this as a position that aligns with a client’s goals, objectives and, ultimately, their core values.

John’s advisory firm continues to operate with a great team and an amazing group of clients. The point of difference and what inspired John to take the leap, was his passion to help people. This meant having genuine relationships with clients and providing them a service that was not based around KPI’s or revenue targets. John started his business with no clients and no income – today he generates close to $1,000,000 per annum in revenue.

I created Affinitas Capital to provide a service that is deeper than just financial, it is about achieving goals and not sacrificing your health and wellbeing along the journey. Forgoing your health in the pursuit of wealth is all too common and something I help clients explore, balance and enjoy.

John Purl Coaching

As John’s clients got to know him, they quickly realised he was a strong advocate for fitness, wellbeing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. John identified with his clients – that if they were struggling with health or happiness, it would be difficult to be financially successful and accumulate wealth.

John made the determination to establish his second business in 2019 and ‘John Purl Coaching’ was born. Using his strong foundations, experiences and own life lessons, John began to work with individuals to help them delve deeper into self-reflection, wellbeing and understanding of:

  • their ultimate end goal, values and passions
  • what is their true purpose in life
  • areas of weakness and opportunity

Through this journey of exploration and reflection John addresses:

  • Career/Business goals
  • Personal goals, financial goals and perceived roadblocks
  • Life stresses, health and wellbeing:-
  1. Including fitness goals and improving overall nutrition, health and mental strength
  2. This includes meditation and other tools to help improve mental wellbeing

Through John’s own journey in health, fitness and wellbeing, it became abundantly clear that there exists a direct correlation between health/wellbeing and ‘success’. Busy professionals and business owners all to often make the health and family sacrifice in order to achieve ‘success’; a success that more often than not does NOT align with their true end goals (articulated by John as “keeping up with the Jones’).

I gain so much joy from seeing the journeys of my coaching clients as they find clarity on their values, passions, goals and objectives. As they make changes in their lives that catapult them into the life they truly want to lead. This is what life is about, deriving joy and happiness from every single day.

John works with clients to identify each area of weakness and opportunity. John describes humans as being ‘like lightning’ as they will always default to the path of least resistance. John’s role includes providing support through difficult, challenging and complex times and he had developed powerful strategies that keep clients on track.

John creates a roadmap for each client so that they can reach their desired outcomes. Each client’s idea of ‘success’ is precisely formulated – and then the steps are laid before them so that they can achieve their goals. The necessary tools and habits needed for implementation are discussed, and John provides guidance and supports every step of the way. Importantly, John ensures that clients are held accountable. Holding clients accountable is the ultimate key to helping them succeed.

Just thought I’d drop you a note to say how today was inspirational.

I feel lucky to have found the right person to help me out and hold me accountable. I am fortunate to have found someone with your broad experience and unique skillset to give me guidance. You’ve very sharp perception and some ‘life smarts’ – that became evident today as you identified my own personal problems and roadblocks!

I feel comfortable about the level at which we covered today’s topics. It was spot on. I feel apprehensive about the future yet reassured at the same time! Making contact with you was the smartest move I made in 2021!
