Since then, the law firm has continued to gain recognition and is now the most prominent brand name in South Australia for legal services. In June, founder Sarah Bartholomeusz was named a winner of the inaugural InDaily 40 Under 40 Awards.

Sarah Bartholomeusz founded the firm after being made redundant from her job as an in-house lawyer when she was 32 weeks pregnant with her second child. Sarah was approached and asked to work as a contractor. From there, she established her own boutique law firm specialising in legal consulting. Starting out as an independent, internal lawyer for clients, she saw how well it worked and so wanted to give this opportunity to other law professionals to work in this flexible and modern way.

South Australia is also the best place in the world to bring up a family. As a mum of two the traditional law firm model does not work for me, and many other women, and I’m determined to change the status quo for women who love the profession but hate the inflexibility of the old-world mode.

Changing the Game

Launched in October 2013, YouLegal offers corporate and commercial legal services and resourcing, including services relating to property law, insolvency, business compliance, trademarks and patents, buying and selling a job, employment law, franchising and, most of all, corporate governance.

The team at YouLegal undertake legal practice based on a set of four key values: unstoppable, fresh, thoughtful, and love your life. Consisting of a network of lawyers, the team bring their experience and training from leading national and international law firms and top in-house teams.

Sarah is a law and politics graduate of the University of Adelaide, sits on a number of boards and is a mentor at innovation incubator ThincLab. Sarah takes a pragmatic view on retaining the youth and talent of South Australia.

Don’t encourage them to stay. Entice them back when they start having families – encourage them to travel after school or university and cut their teeth in other businesses and then once they have demonstrated the ability to start-up, give them incentives to move back here to scale.

The cost of living in South Australia is cheaper when compared to other capitals. It is also a good test audience for starting a business – South Australians are sensitive to price and are therefore considerate in their decision-making…
