By her own confession, Samantha (Sam) has always been a numbers girl. From her time as a financial planner in the UK to start her own business, Sam has had a passion for helping people to reduce their financial stress.

After being made redundant from a large organisation, Sam decided to set up a business that involved doing something she enjoyed and was extremely good at.

Spending Made Easy was born to help people budget and get out of their financial hole using a foolproof system: it uses cloud-based software that projects ten years into the future.

A long way from home.

Originally from Manchester, in England’s northwest, Sam’s background is predominately in finance and customer service.

She was a qualified financial planner in the UK and ran a ‘mortgage desk’ for ten years.

Sam then worked for British Aerospace in Toulouse, France, for more than five years before coming to Australia on a two-month secondment in March 2003.

“It was a very successful two months, and I ended up staying. I am now a proud Citizen!”

She has been running Spending Made Easy since 2016. Sam’s desire was to set up a business whereby she could assist people in ridding themselves of their financial burden. However, convincing them that they need to spend a little on monitoring and education to fix their situation has been a bit of a hurdle.

“That’s essentially what Spending Made Easy does. Help them monitor their budget and improve their spending habits.”

Sam is confident that once she shows people how they can be financially better off via budgeting, they soon see the value Spending Made Easy offers.

Thinking big

Sam believes the secret to her success is to be authentic, honest, passionate, and extremely good at what she does.

Another significant factor in Spending Made Easy’s growth has been her association with Tony Aitchison from business growth consultancy Paradelta Strategy.

“Tony has helped my business become more and more well-known as time goes on. We have built a fabulous reputation and are getting increasingly recognised. As our customer success stories grow, new clients are coming on board.”

A major hurdle Sam has overcome in her business is perseverance. Spending Made Easy has many successful clients, each with a fabulous testimonial. However, Sam knows she can help many more people than she already does.

“We just need them to reach out if they need help. We have heard so many horror stories and terrible financial troubles, but people can be shy. So, anyone reading this, if you’re having budgeting troubles, it’s okay, come speak to us.”

Sam believes she was born to help people. The many emails of thanks, testimonials, phone calls and private messages telling her how their lives have changed forever keep her focused and resilient.

Spending time in Adelaide

Initially, Sam didn’t choose to live in Adelaide. Her secondment meant that she was sent to South Australia for work. It turned out to be a serendipitous decision and she is thankful that she now calls the Festival State home.

“The thing I love about Adelaide is that everything is close at hand: the beach, the hills, the city, the culture, the restaurants, the festivals, the lifestyle. I wouldn’t live anywhere else.”

Although Sam lives here, her partner of more than three years, Shaun, lives in Canberra with his four children. And while both are busy running their respective businesses (Shaun runs an Irrigation business in Canberra), it suits them perfectly. Sam relishes their time when they get together.

When not visiting or hosting Shaun, Sam loves to socialise with friends. She loves the theatre, any live shows, walking, running, and the gym. Look around Adelaide’s west, and you may come across Sam at Scootz Café in West Beach or Bacchus in Henley Beach.

“I love dogs and look after and walk my friendsdogs when possible. I am also on a ‘permanent diet’ and have lost 16 kilos with Weight Watchers. I love cooking and creating new, healthy recipes too!”

Her love of dogs has led to supporting Guide Dogs and even raising her own Guide Dog Puppy, Monty, which Sam found to be an immensely rewarding experience.

Sam’s passion for helping people has also seen her undertake volunteer work for Lifeline and the RFDS.

“The thing I love about Adelaide is that everything is close at hand: the beach, the hills, the city, the culture, the restaurants, the festivals, the lifestyle. I wouldn’t live anywhere else.”

The future made easy

As someone passionate about helping others, Sam would love to expand Spending Made Easy to help as many struggling families and individuals as she can.

“It doesn’t matter how much they earn, whether it’s less than $20k a year or over $200k, people still get into budgeting troubles no matter their income.”

Sam takes pride in the fact that she gets emails all the time from clients telling her how much debt they’ve paid off or how much money they now have in their bank account before payday.

“We have helped people stop living week-to-week; that’s a tremendous relief to many of our clients.”

Another achievement that stands out is that Sam has also written a book about her budgeting experience from a young age.

“It’s called ‘Budgeting Is Crap’ (because it is), but within the book, I also talk about some interesting ways on how to fix it via my many stories.”

The book has had some great reviews and feedback, and Sam has been encouraged (and is planning) to write more books in the near future.

“It’s called ‘Budgeting Is Crap’ (because it is), but within the book, I also talk about some interesting ways on how to fix it via my many stories.”

Happy ending?

For now, Sam is focused purely on growing Spending Made Easy. She is keen to develop the already-intuitive budgeting software even further and would love to see an App-based version down the track.

“Having my fabulous system accessible via your phone whilst you’re on the go will be priceless, especially as we live in a cashless, ‘buy now, pay later’ society! The software would do wonders for our clients, as it would make it even easier to track their spending.”

Asked to sum up her business in as few words as possible, Sam likes to tell people, clients, and anyone who’ll listen, “It’s not about the income; it’s about the outcome.”
