What began as an inpromtu reaction following a disagreement with a former employer, ended with Michael Pomponio and ‘his bride to be’ successfully migrating to Adelaide and starting a family. Indeed, Adelaide is in need of more successful migration stories like that of Michael Pomponio. To be perfectly blunt, we need population growth. That’s certainly the view of Bruce Djite, former soccer star and chief executive of the Committee for Adelaide. At present, Adelaide has a population of 1.77 million and the Committee for Adelaide is pushing for two million by 2030 in order to become a thriving economy.

As an energetic young businessman, Michael Pomponio’s story is the perfect example of what Adelaide needs more of. Happily settled with his now-wife Melania La Rocca, they have started their beautiful family and enjoy the fantastic lifestyle Adelaide has to offer.

Michael Pomponio

Michael Pomponio was born in Turin, Italy. Both his parents are native Italians and his brother is six years older than him. Michael was educated in Italy, studying electronic engineering. Following the separation of his parents, Michael was not able to complete his studies and was forced to look for a job to pay bills while living alone at the age of 19.

Michael arrived in Adelaide in March 2012 tasked with finding employment and accomodation before the arrival of his Italian girlfriend. In June 2012, Michael was joined by his ‘wife to be’ Melania La Rocca and in 2014 they were married. Michael and Melania now have two daughters, a 3 year old and a baby of just 5 months.

Michael loves reading, watching documentaries, gardening and cooking. However, much of his free time is spent with his beautiful family – his wife and two daughters.

Why Did Michael Pomponio Stay in Adelaide?

Michael had the opportunity to live elsewhere in Australia, but made the decision that his family would remain. Michael states that he likes how quiet Adelaide is. Having come from a big city, it is a breath of fresh air to be living in a family orientated and quiet town.

Michael also likes the cultural diversity of Adelaide – there were already many Europeans living here, which helped him and his wife settle initially. Adelaide is indeed known to be a diverse multicultural city. In fact, 44.2 per cent of City of Adelaide residents were born overseas. China, United Kingdom, Europe and Malaysia are the major countries of birth.

South Australians are well aware that Adelaide has been named the third most liveable city in the world. In December 2021, Adelaide became the world’s second National Park City after London at World Urban Parks Congress. The cosmopolitan city living, vibrant parklands, festivals, cafes & restaurants, stretch of beaches – with its amazing lifestyle and culture, Adelaide is without doubt one of the best cities in the world to live.

Career & Study

A friend of Michael’s was already working in Adelaide as a financial planner and that made him turn his attention towards the field of accountancy. After an initial 4 month apprenticeship, Michael took on a full time role at the practice.

This gave Michael the opportunity to gain experience and a range of Australian qualifications (RG146 Life Insurance, Advanced Diploma in Accounting, Diploma in Mortgage Broking) and he became a registered BAS and Tax Agent with the Tax Practitioners Board.

Challenges

One of Michael’s greatest challenges at the beginning was the language barrier. While fluent in English, working in a South Australian office environment proved difficult and presented its own unique challenges.

Australia’s jurisdiction made for a steep learning curve for Michael – especially given he was working within the tricky fields of financial planning, accounting & tax and finance.

Michael found it was difficult to express himself in a different language and in a new work environment. This is a problem when working within the professional advisory sector. A useful tactic at the time was for Michael to volunteer as the treasurer of an Italian radio station for just over 2 years.

My strong accent was taken as a lack of experience and people were more sceptical at the outset.

Fortunately for Michael, there exists a strong network of expats and migrants who understand how complex it can be to relocate from another country.

The few clients that were able to look past his accent soon realised Michael was capable of delivering an excellent professional service. Many of these people have remained clients and friends of Michael to this day.

When you speak with Michael, it is quite astounding how far he has come in such a short time. His English is superb and includes expert knowledge of technical business terminology. Any trace of uncertainty has long since disappeared.

Without doubt, Michael is now capable of expressing himself clearly in the most technical and complex business advisory areas!

Michael Pomponio Business Interests

In 2017, Michael Pomponio stepped out on his own and began as a sole trader. A few months later, Michael incorporated his company Account Pigeon.

Offering professional accounting and tax advisory services, Michael steadily grew his business and now has over 160 clients.

Many of Michael’s clients are friends as he goes the extra mile in giving expert advice and taking care of their financial position. Michael believes that pursuing your passion in life is far more important than being in business just to ‘chase money’.

Michael has always enjoyed having multiple business interests. Michael states that he loves the business cycle, new ventures and innovation – it’s not just the thrill of taking risks but the challenges they bring and the lessons you learn from failed ventures. Michael describes how these lessons have been priceless to him, stating there are no courses available that teach you what business and life can teach you.

Passion, experience, and outstanding service is what has helped to grow my business. My number one priority is a satisfaction to customers.

Michael plans to expand his existing business Account Pigeon. However, he is aware that the rapid development of technology, software and algorithms threatens to replace traditional accounting and bookkeeping and he is keen to diversify his business interests.

Michael’s passion for businesses means he is always looking for other opportunities and different businesses to venture into.
