There is a good reason that YAdelaide has retained a Lazy Ballerina photo ‘pride of place’ on our facebook cover page for over 3 years now – it is simply one of our favourite wineries in South Australia!!

Undoubtedly, it serves the very finest of wines. However, it is a rich combination of its cellar door, restaurant service, scenic gardens, entertainment and general ambience that makes it so unique. Add to this a ‘hands-on customer table service’ and the winning formula shines through.

The Lazy Ballerina has had it’s fair share of media coverage and the winery is popular (just checkout some of the #LazyBallerina instagram snaps, it’s become quite the trend for SA influencers to be caputured there!). However, the winery deserves a deeper acknowledgement than this (in our opinion).

The Lazy Ballerina is quaint, exclusive and feels ‘hidden away’. This gives it the feeling of remaining somewhat humble. The mark of a successfully operated family owned winery that consistently delivers.

Hence the purpose of our article. It is the family and supporters who are working tirelessly behind the scenes of the Lazy Ballerina to which we would like this article to pay homage!

James Hook

A bit of research behind the founder of this family business James Hook, reveals a fascinating story. James Hook is passionate about viticulture and appears to have known his life purpose right from the beginning.

Completing a Bachelor of Agricultural Science (Viticulture) at the University of Adelaide, James then matriculated to his Masters degree in Viticulture and Enology.

James’s thesis? ‘Assessment of Vineyard Perfomance to Predict Winegrape Quality’. James continues as a research scholar at the University of Adelaide.

In addition to his reading and research, James Hook has a demonstrated career as a true South Australian wine industry specialist. In 2019, James became a wine steward and sommelier with the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (a sommelier curates a wine list which complements a restaurant’s cuisine offering). James is also a registered wine grapes assessor with the Australian Wine Industry Code of Conduct.

With experience in vineyard operations, marketing and sustainable agriculture, James has been providing consultancy services for grape growers in the Limestone Coast, Padthaway, McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek, Adelaide Hills, Fleurieu and Barossa Valley since 2001.

James’s background includes environmental management; developing precursors to the Sustainable Winegrowing Australia programme and the CropWatch vineyard advisory service.

Concurrent to his vineyard and environmental assessment work, it was in 2004 that James and his family founded the luxurious Lazy Ballerina winery. Situated amongst five acres of garden, the cellar has sweeping views of beautifully maintained gardens. It is the perfect place for events, ‘a getaway’ or just a relaxing family lunch.

In all these capacities I am familiar with the quality of vineyards and grapes grown and wine produced in the above listed South Australian wine regions and with the yields, qualities and end-use of grapes both presently and historically.

James Hook

Born is the Lazy Ballerina

James Hook and parents Paul and Pat established the Lazy Ballerina in 2004 and it is now run by James and his wife Miriam Bourne. The family have become renowned winemakers in the Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale and have created South Australia’s leading cellar doors, with accompanying great food and a family centric focus.

Lazy Ballerina is about an hour’s drive from Adelaide. High rainfall makes for the winery’s beautiful lush gardens. It’s an idyllic setting, yet the winery retains a rustic and authentic appearance. The huge paddock, lush gardens and surrounding wooded area is full of paths to explore.

Purposely designed natural play areas can be enjoyed by the whole family. It’s safe for children to wander around (within the realms of reasonable supervision).

There are rope swings, boules, and other fun family games for casual entertainment. There are baby changing facilities in the frequently cleaned and well maintained bathroom. High chairs are available on request.

Lazy Ballerina – the Experience

The wine list can be found on the beautifully designed Lazy Ballerina website and includes McLaren Vale reds and Adelaide Hills whites. In addition to some of these tantalising wines, a $40pp “Let Us Feed You” pizza and platter menu for lunch is available (there are deals for kids).

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can buy a flight of tasting wines for just $15. The platters and pizzas that continue to emerge are delicious and there’s enough to feed even the largest of parties.

Smaller groups and couples can enjoying sharing their delicious range of pizzas in quiet spots dotted around the gardens. WARNING. The staff at the Lazy Ballerina will not stop until you’re stuffed. We suspect that no-one has ever left the Lazy Ballerina feeling dissatisfied!

The Lazy Ballerina operates all year round and is just as enjoyable in winter. Undercover seating is available and there are games and toys that keep the kids amused.

There is something special about visiting the Lazy Ballerina during the cooler seasons. The outside furnace, firepits and heaters make it feel cosy and warm in the coldest of temperatures.

The Lazy Ballerina is always fully booked out for lunch nearly every weekend, so booking in advance is essential and this can be done via the Lazy Ballerina website.

The Lazy Ballerina runs special events, so keep a lookout on their facebook page. On occassion, you will enjoy live entertainment into the evening at one of their specially organised events.

And absolutely nothing beats the stunning sunset at Lazy Ballerina…

Recent Additions…

In 2020, James Hook and Miriam Bourne made some additions. The pandemic afforded the owners an opportunity to build a new marquee and an Eco Pod accommodation (aptly named the Acorn Nook – the kids were entertained yesterday by collecting a mountain of acorns).

The rustic Eco Pod is fitted with a fire pit, a swing chair and an outdoor bath. Equipped with a queen bed, kitchenette facilities and outside BBQ, the Acorn Nook promises a restorative experience and nature getaway.

In addition to this, a new ethereal all weather, multipurpose marquee has been built (in fact, our group sat there only yesterday…). Seating up to 50 people, the marquee is available for bookings during colder months as well as for larger Lazy Ballerina’s lunches.

Acorn Nook is our little homestay tucked away across from the stunning Kuitpo forest, screaming all things sustainable and eco-friendly.

There’s Nothing Lazy About James Hook…

James, Miriam and family, we sincerely congratulate you on your hard work and achievement thus far. Everyone can see just how hard you work to ensure your weekend visitors have the best possible experience. James himself is just as ‘hands on’ as his staff and they all go the extra mile in terms of customer services. Lazy Ballerina is nothing short of a genuine South Australian success story.

As for James, there was a deep concern for his fellow winery owners during the 2019 fires (inbetween tending to his guests, I happened to witness James anxiously following news coverage at the time and we discussed the devastion and severe ramifications).

James’s empathy extends to his fellows, colleagues and friends that have suffered in recent times due to these ongoing natural disasters. Fortunately, James is here to assist by providing his expert advice to those in need.

During the winter months, we were looking at options to accommodate our visitors in all-weather environments. We’ve positioned the permanent marquee in the perfect, ethereal spot to take advantage of the sunsets up here.
