Josh recognised that there wasnt really anyone who specialised in providing support and advice to tradies and helping them to grow their business.

Thats when the idea of the Financial Foreman began to take hold.

And, coupled with the shift to cloud-based accounting, the accountant for tradies in Adelaide was born to provide an alternative to the large accountancy firms that seemingly had little time to work with tradespeople.

A passion for helping others

Josh was born and raised in Alice Springs. An inquisitive bloke by nature, he always had a penchant for numbers at school, where he studied accounting and economics. It seemed he was destined for a career in accounting.

However, it wasnt a fast progression. Josh had several jobs, including a hotel porter and a courier driver, before deciding to head to Adelaide and Flinders Uni to undertake a Foundation Course as a pathway to an undergraduate course in Accounting.

He blasted through the first year with a distinction average. Rather than being satisfied with simply completing his course before dipping his toes in the industry, Josh preferred a more hands-on experience. He secured an undergraduate accountant position with SP Accountants – a small Adelaide accounting and advisory.

Josh progressed to the role of senior accountant and became a CPA. He especially loved working with small business owners and discovering how they got their start, what drove them to get out of bed in the morning, and their plans for the future.

The foundation of the Financial Foreman

The Financial Foreman has been up and running for more than five years. Josh has grown his staff to three in that time, with one team member based here in Adelaide while two others are based in the Philippines. He has also increased his turnover from $50k in his first year to more than $350K.

In recognition of his impressive accountancy skills, Josh was a finalist in the 2018 Young Accountant of the Year and has had a feature article published on the Xero Accounting website.

He is also currently the President of the Australian Sub-Contractors Association and has a passion for ensuring apprentices get the right start in the building and construction industry.

I have a range of tailored packages to help Adelaide tradies and also offer training through the Financial Forman Academy to help tradies to understand their business better,” Josh explains.

Josh & Katies love for Adelaide

Josh is married to Katie, who also happens to be an accountant, albeit in quite a different role to that of her partner. She is a company accountant for SA Power Networks. Together, they have just moved into their own home with their two fur babies [cats].

Away from the heady world of numbers, Josh indulges in his love of baseball, playing for Adelaide University and Sturt baseball clubs. He is also the treasurer of the Adelaide University Baseball Club. He is also a Bombers fan, gym-goer, a coffee tragic and an enthusiastic sampler of craft beers.

Networking is also a big part of Joshs life. He has been part of BNI Bayside for many years in various leadership roles, including a stint as Vice President.

Although he could have made a move back to Alice Springs, the relaxed Adelaide lifestyle had well and truly taken hold. He and Katie love that everything is in easy reach with time regularly spent at many of Adelaidebeautiful beaches, restaurants, wineries and cafés. They are also huge fans of the Adelaide festival scene and look forward to the Adelaide Fringe each year.

Getting out and supporting local cafés and restaurants wherever possible during the past few years of the pandemic has also been a key activity with firm favourite Chico Palms, an often-visited eatery.

The future for the Financial Foreman

Josh has big plans to grow the Financial Foreman. Like many other businesses, its a challenge to get the right balance of managing the rapid growth of the business against personal time and taking care of life away from the shopfront.

He believes the key to his success is having the right attitude and genuinely caring for his clients and their business. If that happens, the rest tends to take care of itself,” Josh says.

He also places enormous importance on workplace culture and an attitude of care for his people so that (if need be) the Financial Foreman can continue without his involvement.

A holistic approach to business that moves beyond accounting is something Josh is working on. He has recently set up Financial Foreman Wealth Solutions with friend and financial planner Nicholas Georgiou from Georgiou Financial Services.

The Financial Foreman is the Adelaide accountant for tradies with a drive to get tradies off the tools earlier by building their businesses and allowing them to make the right decisions for future growth.

Often accountants and financial planners dont talk to each other, but Financial Foreman Wealth Solutions brings together these two financial professions. I wanted to create an avenue for tradies to be able to reward themselves. Im a big advocate that hard work ought to be rewarded,” says Josh.
