Origins of Adelaide, South Australia

In honour of Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, queen consort to King William IV, Adelaide was founded in 1836 as the capital for a freely-settled British province in Australia. One of Adelaide's founding fathers designed Adelaide, Colonel William Light, choosing a location near the River Torrens. The lands are owned by the Kaurna people. South Australia's rich heritage continued into the 1840s, with German and English settlers building lives around land cultivation and mining expeditions.
